Chapter Twelve

EVIE found stepping away from Caleb much more difficult than it should have been.

The gentle heat and excitement of that kiss still fizzed in her veins.

For a few moments, they'd given in to closeness and gotten lost in each other. Part of Evie wished they could have stayed lost.

But there was too much to do. And this wasn't the time or the place to explore what might be.

There was too much at stake for Evie.

For Caleb.

For their families and their people.

And, if Velia got her hands on whatever was in that garden, the entire world was at risk.

So Evie stiffened her spine along with her resolve and planted her feet to keep from giving in to the urge to shorten the space between her and Caleb.

Beckett and Kaile loped into sight and, from seemingly out of nowhere, Gwen stepped out onto the path to join them.

Evie bit her lip, hoping to hide her restive nerves while they waited for the wolves to shift back to human form.

"What's going on down there?" Caleb demanded impatiently, as soon as Becket and Kaile had returned to a shape capable of speech.

"Well, the first hour was mostly Velia berating Tort and her merc captain for allowing themselves to be run in circles by farmhands," Kaile answered with a smirk. "After that, it got interesting."

Beckett rolled his eyes and nudged Kaile in the ribs. "They don't want you to reenact it word for word. Save the dramatic retelling and give them highlights."

"I could tell it quicker if you didn't interrupt," Kaile growled at Beckett. "From what we pieced together, Velia is trying to consolidate her power. She's maneuvered things so that Duke Torren is now head of the Council."

Caleb's violent snarl at mention of the duke startled Evie and curiosity got the better of her. "Who's Torren?"

"The short story is my mother was instrumental in sending his father to prison for treason. Lyle was the eldest and inherited the title. His younger brother Landry ran away. And changed his name to Tort."

"Oh," Evie said, absorbing the information. "Well that explains why Velia is working with the mayor of a small border village."

Kaile nodded in agreement before continuing. "All her sudden changes are causing ripples, however. People in Ardell are starting to ask questions. She's only holding on because she has the magic thingy that lets her appear as Riona and she's panicking because the power is running out."

"So that's why she's here," Evie mused, putting the pieces together. "If she believes the Glicien duke was right and some powerful fairy magic exists on the estate, she'll be desperate to get her hands on it. She can use it to create a glamour whenever she wants."

Caleb's expression twisted into a horrified mask and the breath rushed out of him like he'd taken a blow.

Heart twisting in sympathy, Evie watched as he steadied himself, face smoothing out into a blank expression that revealed nothing.

Kaile glanced uncertainly at Beckett, and Evie had no doubt this wasn't the end of the unwanted news they had to deliver to Caleb.
